A trip to London and a special experience in Ayse’s studio

Sep 1, 2025

Last week, I had the opportunity to spend seven days in London with my mom, and our trip was for a very special workshop with artist Ayse Habibe Kucuk.

It’s difficult to put into words just how much this woman impressed me. Brilliant, calm, kind, and so incredibly down to earth, without a trace of negative energy. I’m truly happy that I can now call her not only a colleague, but also a friend.

During the workshop, we learned so much. We focused mainly on handbuilding, while those who wanted could also try wheel throwing.

We created two large vases using the hand-coiling technique, discovered new tricks and techniques, and Ayse introduced us to handbuilding methods in a completely different way. It was so inspiring that you simply can’t help but fall in love with ceramics — whether you expect to or not.

What fascinated me the most was how clearly you can see that ceramics is her greatest passion.

Ayse comes from an academic background in sculpture and completed her studies in Turkey, and that unique combination gives her work a special dimension that very few people possess. She is a true master of her craft — simply unmatched.

Her studio is just as special as she is: bright, warm, and welcoming, just like her personality. Because of her, London has become an even more special place for me, and I’m certain this journey is only the beginning. I truly believe we will continue collaborating and meeting many more times in the future.

Another special experience was working with a different type of clay than the one I’m used to. It was my first time encountering this kind of material, and Ayse is a true expert in working with it. Learning from someone like her has been one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had.

I know this is not the end — it is only the beginning of a new and very special chapter.
