What will you experience:

This will be two hours of slowing down in the best possible way.

You'll work with clay using your hands — no wheels, no rush, no pressure to make something perfect.

Tea and Suzana will guide you through every step, but the real experience is something harder to describe: the way the clay feels between your fingers, the quiet focus that settles in, the laughter that tends to happen somewhere around the second glass of wine.

What will you learn: Discover the essential techniques of ceramics and develop the skills needed to turn your creative ideas into reality.

  • Clay preparation (wedging)

  • Pinch and coil techniques

  • Slab-building techniques

  • Shaping cylinders and bowls using hand-building methods

  • Joining pieces and attaching handles

  • Selecting and using essential tools

  • Decorating with engobes, underglazes, and sgraffito

  • Refining and finishing forms

  • Creating foot rings

  • Glazing your finished pieces

Course Structure – 8 Sessions (2 hours each)

Session 1

Introduction to Ceramics: Getting familiar with materials, processes, and basic studio safety. Clay preparation and beginning your first project.

Sessions 2–3

Learning and applying core hand-building techniques: pinch, coil, and slab building. Starting with smaller pieces such as mugs and bowls.

Sessions 4–5

Continuing work on personal projects: joining components, attaching handles, and shaping larger forms such as vases or bowls. Introduction to decorative techniques (sgraffito, engobes, textures).

Session 6

Final opportunity to begin new pieces. After this session, the focus shifts to refining and preparing existing work for firing.

Session 7

An introduction to the world of glazing through the lens of Tea and Suzana, who develop every glaze themselves in the studio. You'll explore different types, application techniques, and the small decisions that give each piece its final character.

Session 8

Glazing has a way of feeling like a leap of faith, especially at the beginning. That mysterious in-between stage where the piece is yours, but the fire has the final word. In this session we do final glazing and preparation for the last firing. Closing discussion and review of all projects.

Who is it for: Perfect for beginners as well as those looking to refine and elevate their skills.

What will you make: Each participant crafts their own ceramic pieces, something that will carry the memory of this period of learning, exploring creativity and making unique art pieces.

If you miss a session: Missing one or two sessions is manageable, though we strongly recommend attending the first classes, as they cover the foundational techniques.

If you do miss a session, we will support you in catching up when you return.

Please note that make-up sessions or alternative dates are not available.

Included in the Price

  • We provide all necessary materials for the course, including buff and craft crank stoneware clays, tools, slips, underglazes, moulds, and studio-mixed glazes.

  • Soft drinks, water, coffee, and light snacks are included in the workshop fee and available throughout the session.

What's not included in the price: FIRING FEE

Every piece you create will go through two firings,  bisque firing and glaze firing, before it becomes the finished object you take home.

The firing fee is calculated based on the weight of your unfired piece at the end of the workshop.

We want to be completely open about this, because when you're building something substantial (a large vase, a generous bowl) the kiln process is a significant part of the work:

  • large pieces take up most of the kiln space (sometimes just one or two pieces fit at a time), and

  • they need slower, longer firing cycles, and they use more energy

Here's how it works: A fixed firing fee of €50 covers pieces up to 6 kg, with €10 for each additional kilogram.

So for example: A vase and a bowl that together weigh 7 kg would be: €50 + €10 = €60 total, for both firings, using our studio glazes.

*If your piece is damaged during firing through no fault of the making, we'll refund the firing cost in full.

What to bring:

Feel free to bring an apron and wear something you don't mind getting a little earthy.  And most importantly, some ideas and good vibes. We'll handle the music and the bad jokes.

Clay is a beautiful, and wonderfully unpredictable material. That is precisely what makes each piece one of a kind.

Throughout the processes of shaping, drying, and firing, slight variations in form, colour, or final finish may occur. These nuances are a natural part of working with ceramics and reflect the authenticity of handmade craft.

Such variations do not diminish the value of the experience and are not considered the responsibility of the organiser.

By participating in the workshop, you acknowledge and accept this possibility.
